Worldwide production of ethanol for fuel is estimated (2007) at well over 50 billion l/y (Reference 1). The annual US production of fuel ethanol from agricultural commodities was running in late 2007 at close to 30 billion litres (http://www.ethanolrfa.org/industry/statistics/). There were over 130 plants in operation. In Europe, fuel ethanol production has grown to about 1 billion litres while biodiesel is much stronger at about 5 billion litres/year (http://www.biofuelstp.eu/bioethanol.html). Brazil was until recently the world leader in fuel ethanol production with over 15 billion litres annually (2006). Canadian production and use of these fuels has been growing during the last few years. According to the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association, annual ethanol fuel production (2007) was about 1 billion litres and expected to double by 2010. (http://www.greenfuels.org).
