Mr. Roy has been working in the field of fish farming for over 30 years. He renovated an old fish farm in 2004, adding solar panels covering 196 m2 (2,115 square feet)-as well as other inventions of his own.
Mr. Roy produces rainbow and speckled trout, 90% of which are for consumption and 10% of which are for lake enrichment. Mr. Roy is currently the largest single fish producer in Quebec (second-largest behind a business composed of three fish farming operations). He produces 200 tonnes of fish each year. The entire province of Quebec produces 1,300 tonnes annually.
Quebec produces very little farmed fish because of legislation governing hatcheries and fish farms; producers cannot raise fish in lake cages and must respect certain wastewater disposal regulations.
Mr. Roy's fish farm is entirely electronically controlled. For example, mash and meal dispensing is automatic.
Mr. Roy can heat air and water at the same time using a heat exchanger, which also aerates the water, increasing its oxygen levels. The system helps his trout grow more rapidly.
Mr. Roy also modified the structure of his ponds to optimize their utility and use of space. He made them square, which allows him to put many more ponds in a given space than he could have with round ponds. He also constructed the ponds with interior angles of 45º so that whirlpools can be created, as in circular ponds, and waste can be drained from the centre.
