About Us

“We envision a stronger economy with opportunities for community economic development and a lessening of our environmental footprint by fostering the adoption of renewable energy technologies on-farm while remaining competitive in the global marketplace.”

-IReF vision statement

Farm lands are a source of an abundance of natural resources, yet many farmers still purchase all of their energy off-farm and are unable to find relevant agricultural information for renewable technologies.

The Integration of Renewable Energy on the Farm (IReF) website is a one-stop shop for on-farm renewable energy information. As a first point of contact for farmers and agri-food producers, the website features technical information and online tools that will help farmers assess viable options for using renewable energy on individual farms while determining the exact return on their investment.

IReF will promote the agricultural sector’s use of agro-environmentally sound energy solutions that improve production, profitability and opportunities for economic diversification.

The IReF project has two primary goals:

• To provide an unbiased online source of information and knowledge to farm owners and operators to help them identify potential energy related scenarios that could be economically and environmentally beneficial for their farm operations; and,

• To provide training and support for the implementation of regional renewable energy resource workshops for the agricultural industry.

The site provides a centralized source of information on renewable energy technology, finance, environmental issues, education and training, and government initiatives and resources.

Through our web-based technical information centre, we offer information, tools and a forum for farmers to research technologies and exchange information on their ideas and projects. The website serves as both a tutorial for understanding technology development and adoption as well as a central source for information resources and links to other sites.

IReF is the result of a four-year partnership between Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Agriculture Canada and more than 20 agricultural and energy organizations across Canada. The Canadian Federation of Agriculture has assumed the administration of this website, which allows Canadian farmers take part in the renewable energy revolution.
